Captain Erik Utter began his career in law enforcement when he was hired by the Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office in 1995. His initial assignment was as a resident patrol deputy in Spring River and La Pine. Since that time he has worked as a criminal detective, Field Training officer, Patrol Sergeant, Detective Sergeant, Patrol Lieutenant, Detective Lieutenant and coordinator of the Field Training and Evaluation Program. He was promoted to the rank of Captain in July of this year, and was assigned to the Patrol Division.
Captain Utter graduated from Pacific University in 1994, and holds a Bachelor of Science Degree. He also holds Basic, Intermediate, Advanced, Supervisory and Management certificates from the Oregon Department of Public Safety Standards and Training. He is also a graduate of the Oregon State Sheriffs’ Association Command College. He has served as a member of the International Homicide Investigators’ Association, the Oregon Police Officers’ Association and the Sexual Assault Response Task Force.
Captain Utter has extensive knowledge and expertise in the areas of Patrol Procedures, Criminal Investigations and Field Training techniques. He currently serves on the Deschutes County Family Violence Council.
