FREE Document Shredding Event to Help Prevent Identity Theft

The Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office provides residents the opportunity to safely destroy personal documents and learn identity theft prevention tips at the same time.

Data Delete of Oregon and SecureShred will be offering on-site document destruction at no cost to the public. This event is intended for private residential document shredding only, not for business or company disposal.

At the event, the Sheriff’s Office will also have an information booth to provide citizens with information on how to avoid becoming an identity theft victim and what to do if you believe your identity has already been stolen.

“At this event, we want to make Deschutes County citizens aware of the risks of improper document disposal and of the related problems of identity theft,” said Sheriff Larry Blanton.

All citizens of Deschutes County are invited to bring their personal documents for proper disposal.

No advance document sorting will be necessary and shredding equipment can operate and destroy paperwork with paper clips, staples attached. File folders and binders may also be shredded.

For more information about this event in September, please call the Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office at 388-6655.

Prescription Medication and Over-the-Counter Drug Disposal Program

The Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office is offering a Prescription Medication and Over-the- Counter drug disposal program to the citizen’s of Deschutes County. This program is designed to keep unwanted or unused medications out of the hands of abusers, children and animals. In addition, the program is intended to reduce negative environmental impact by using proper disposal practices.

Prescription Medication and Over-the Counter drug abuse and theft is on the rise. According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), “In 2006, 16.2 million Americans age 12 and older had taken a prescription pain reliever, tranquilizer, stimulant, or sedative for non-medical purposes at least once in the year prior to being surveyed.” (www.nida.nih.gov/drugpages/prescription.html). It is an easy conclusion to make that a good majority of medications being abused are obtained from family members or acquaintances.

Sheriff Larry Blanton stated, “The Sheriff’s Office is offering a disposal method that prevents not only accidental ingestion and drug abuse, but also a way to dispose of the medications without contamination of our aquatic environment because wastewater treatment systems are not designed to remove many medications.”

In the past, most of us have used water disposal as a method to destroy excess or expired medications. As the population in Deschutes County grows, water disposal can cause varying amount of contaminants to be introduced into our water ways and can harm others, animals or the environment if enough contaminants reach our surface and ground waters, or soils.
