On 01-27-2014 at about 5:30pm Deschutes County 911 received a call from a female (Roxanne Jones) requesting help as she had become disoriented and lost due to the dense fog during a hike in the Badlands area east of Bend and it was getting dark. Five Deschutes County Search and Rescue Teams comprised of 23 volunteers, three deputies and a USFS Law Enforcement Officer responded to the call. Jones stayed in contact with deputies via text message.
At about 6:47 pm Jones advised that she could see the police lights and hear the sirens of the USFS Officer and safely walked to his location. Jones had started her hike at about 3:30hrs and had taken plenty of water and was dressed for the weather.
The Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office would like to remind all Back Country users to prepare for changing weather, take a well charged cell phone, water and other basic needs in case they encounter adverse conditions and need to be out in the weather for a prolonged period of time.
