Applications are accepted until 5:00 p.m. on January 30, 2015
The link below is the application packet for membership in the Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office Search & Rescue (SAR) team. Thank you for your interest in joining one of the largest, most active SAR units in Oregon. We are currently accepting applications until January 30, 2015. Completed application may be submitted by mail or in person to the main Sheriff’s Office in Bend, or any of the regional Sheriff’s stations. To facilitate processing, you are encouraged to submit your application as soon as possible. Upon receipt of your completed application packet, we will conduct both criminal and Department of Motor Vehicle background checks. We will also ask you to be available for a group meeting and personal interview. Upon selection, we will provide the final Academy Schedule.
We urge you to carefully consider your application and ability to fully participate. Search & Rescue is a highly demanding volunteer experience, both in terms of training and actual missions. Your first year commitment is extensive and time consuming! It includes required General Search and Medical training, summer and winter outdoor skills, training focused on navigation, communication, and survival, plus learning to work within the SAR organizational structure. SAR volunteers must be physically fit and able to hike for distances with a 24 hour pack over varied terrain in any conditions. Members are expected to provide their own personal equipment and supplies.
