Captain Michael Shults

Captain Michael Shults has served with the Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office since December of 2017. Prior to coming to the Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office Captain Shults was employed with the Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office for over 30 years in both Corrections and Law Enforcement. His current duties as a Captain include managing the corrections division and the court security unit.

Captain Shults started his career as a Corrections Deputy working at the Multnomah County Detention Center located in downtown Portland. In 1990, he was promoted to Sergeant and assisted with the construction of the Multnomah County Inverness Jail. During the time of extreme jail overcrowding, he was enlisted to help change the inmate classification system to provide better safety for staff, and fully utilize all existing jail space. Prior duties included Public Information Officer, River Patrol, Multnomah County Restitution Center that housed 160 inmates on work release program, and Chief Deputy of the Corrections Division.

Captain Michael Shults graduated from Southern Oregon State College located in Ashland, Oregon with a B.S. in Secondary Education.
