Patrol Division Commander

Mike Sundberg began his law enforcement career with the Deschutes County Sheriff's Office in 2002.

Over the course of his career, Mike has held the positions of Field Law Enforcement Technician, Patrol Deputy Sheriff, Detective assigned to the Central Oregon Drug Enforcement Team, Detective assigned to the Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office Street Crimes Unit, Patrol Sergeant, Training Sergeant, Patrol Lieutenant, Operations Lieutenant, and currently supervises patrol operations.

 

Mike has held a Basic, Intermediate, Advanced, Supervisory, and Management certificates. Mike has also received many commendations to include being recognized by the Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office Employee Association as Deputy of the Year (2004), was recognized by Oregon State Sheriff’s Association (OSSA) for a Life Saving Award (2008), and recognized by OSSA as Deputy of the Year (2009).

 

Mike was a founding member of the Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office Special Operations Tactical Team and served for over ten years as an operator, assistant team leader, team leader, and assistant team commander. Mike has mentored members of the agency as a Field Training Officer, CPR and First Aid Instructor, a Crisis Intervention Team Officer, Firearms Instructor, Active Threat Instructor, Patrol Tactics Instructor, and Instructor for the Central Oregon Reserve Academy. Mike has also been an instructor at the Oregon State Sheriff’s Association Basic SWAT School, where he helps instruct new SWAT operators from across the state.

 

Prior to his law enforcement career, Mike served his country in the United States Navy as a Hospital Corpsman. Mike was deployed immediately following the attacks on September 11th, and served aboard the USS John C. Stennis (CVN 74) as a flight deck medic in support of combat operations during Operation Enduring Freedom.  Mike left the United States Navy with an Honorable Discharge.

Mike has been married for 26 years to his wife Shawna. They have lived in Redmond since 2002. Their daughter Mikella is currently in college with plans of attending law school.  Mike enjoys staying active with golfing, working out, and spending quality time with his family.

 

Mike looks forward to accepting this new challenge and responsibilities by serving the residents of Deschutes County as patrol captain.
