Bike Theft

Your bike is worth protecting. Here’s how.

Deschutes County is one of the great cycling communities in the country, with roads, trails, gravel, and commuter routes, and the bikes people ride here reflect that. A quality bike is a serious investment, and unfortunately, that makes our community an attractive target for theft. Bike theft is one of the most common property crimes in Central Oregon, and one of the most preventable.

The good news is that a few simple steps dramatically reduce your risk, and if the worst does happen, they also dramatically improve your chances of getting your bike back.

Register Your Bike

This is the single most important thing you can do. Bike Index is a free, nationwide registry that makes stolen bikes harder to sell and easier for law enforcement to return when recovered. One of the biggest obstacles to recovering stolen bikes is proving ownership. Most people don’t have their serial number written down anywhere. Registration solves that problem before it happens.
