Captain Michael Gill

Captain Michael Gill began his public safety career with the Bend Police Department, serving as a Reserve Officer from 1991 to 1993 and again from 1996 to 1997. In 1996, he joined the Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office as a Jail Technician, beginning a steady progression through the ranks.

Captain Gill was promoted to Corporal in 2002, Sergeant in 2007, and Lieutenant in 2011. In his most recent assignment as Administrative Lieutenant, he oversaw DCSO Jail Inspections, ensured compliance with Oregon Jail Standards established by the Oregon State Sheriff’s Association (OSSA), and oversaw the Adult Jail’s Accreditation program. His leadership and professionalism were recognized statewide when he was named OSSA Jail Supervisor of the Year in 2019.

He holds a Bachelor of Science in Criminology with a minor in Psychology from Southern Oregon State University. Captain Gill has also earned Basic, Intermediate, Advanced, Supervisory, and Management Certificates through the Department of Public Safety Standards and Training (DPSST). Captain Gill has served as a Field Training Officer and as an instructor in Taser, cell extraction, and Pepper Ball systems, contributing to the Sheriff’s Office’s training and operational readiness.

Before entering law enforcement, Captain Gill served in the United States Army from 1986 to 1990. While serving in a Military Intelligence Battalion as a sergeant, he was an intelligence analyst and a Russian Linguist. He was stationed in West Germany during the Cold War and witnessed the early stages of German reunification—an experience that shaped his commitment to service and discipline.

Captain Gill has been married to his wife, Andrea, for 26 years. Together they have four children and four grandchildren. Outside of work, he enjoys traveling, hiking, and camping. He is also an avid audiophile, with a deep appreciation for high‑fidelity sound and the craftsmanship behind exceptional music listening experiences.
